Game play (30-45 min.)
Open up the game site and start game day timer : http://almost-utopia.com/####
Read the two problems of the day. 5 min.

Drinking Water Crisis 1
Filios is a small country without natural lakes and has to import its water. The earthquake has destroyed parts of Xtensica, specifically two of the water purification plants. The plants together produce 200 million gallons each day. Filios has bought the rights to use 150 million gallons each month, but Xtensica currently only produces 100 million gallons of clean water a month. Filios pays $ 40 million a year for clean water from Xtensica (part of the programs for residents). Without clean water Cholera will start to spread killing in 2 months. This will kill 100 people each month.

Earthquake Crisis 2
Yesterday there was an earthquake in Xtensica that measured 7.1 on Richter scale. The earthquake’s epicenter was 50 miles south of the capital La Xtensifica, yet the effects were severe. Earthquakes and reconstruction experts say the cleanup will cost about $ 700 million. A big problem is drinking water. Most of the drinking water in the country will go to Filios. With clean water production at only 50% capacity, you can not provide water for Filios and people of Xtensica. It will cost $ 40 million to repair.

Negotiation: 30 min.
Have each country talk amongst themselves about a solution (People without a country can talk about what solution they would like to see, and how they might be able to persuade people to do what they want.).
One of the country’s diplomats presents their solution.
Ask the students the following questions:
1. How does each solution serve each country?
2. Which solution did you like best?
3. Would you change anything from those solutions?
Decide on a solution if possible. End game day whether or not a solution has been reached.

Conclusion: 10 min. Students answer the following questions.
1. What emotions have you seen so far today?
2. How did people’s emotions change the way they saw solutions?
