Pregame 40 min.
Watch one of the following videos.
https://www.ted.com/talks/jamila_raqib_the_secret_to_effective_nonviolent_resistance (One part may not be suitable for young children.)
The first three minutes of this video might be a good alternative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4G7TtZwO2Q
List with the students how people use non-violent actions all together to get people to change their minds.
Discussion questions:
When is it appropriate to use this type of action?
What other tactics might one try to use first?
Why might one want to use this type of action?
Is violence ever okay? If yes, when? If not, why do you have an army?
Game Play: 30 mins.
Set game timer and click “End Day” on your website.
Let people start to negotiate.
Conclusion: (10 mins.)
Which problem has been the hardest for the group to solve? Why do you think it’s so tough? What skill(s) that you’ve learned (communication, collaboration, negotiation, willing to be wrong, non-violent protest) needs to be used?
