Gameday 3

Game day 3: 90 mins.

Materials: Optional Book “The Pain and the Great One” by Judy Bloom
Objectives:
Students will utilize strategies for negotiation.

Bellwork: 10 min.
Have students answer the following question: How do you get someone who doesn’t agree with you to change their mind?

Pregame: 40 min.
Either have students read the following article or “The Pain and the Great One”. Either can be done as a read aloud too. If you chose to read the first part of the article before review it, and then read the negotiating part. For lower grades, read the subheadings and have them tell you what they think they mean before reading the paragraph. Feel free to paraphrase as needed.

Talk about what happens when you understand how someone else feels.
Teach the phrase:
“I used to feel that way, but then I learned….”
Use then when you have changed your mind about something, or to help someone see your point of view.
Read the crises of the day.

Debt Crisis 5
Xtensica owes $ 500 million to the central bank. It must pay within 10 days of the game (10 months time). If not paid within 10 months, the leaders will have to resign their posts and the central bank will lead the country.

Fishing Crisis 6
Due to overfishing in the waters off of Ramafa, Intelibus’s fishing industry is slowly dying. The profits have dropped 10%. They will continue to drop if major reforms are not taken. This will affect food production by 1% a month for any month that it is not resolved.
Ask students to imagine how the other countries are feeling after reading this. Talk about emotions, and talk about what solutions would not be popular for one country, but they could be for another and why that might be.

Game Play: 30-40 mins.
Set game timer and click “End Day” on your website.
Let people start to negotiate.

Conclusion: 2 mins.
Have students give a grade from 1-10 of how well they were able to read each other’s emotions.
